Is Your Credit Report Wrong About You? A Reddit Credit Guide
Late payments that never happened, settled debts still showing a balance, or accounts that aren’t yours can all hurt your credit. Here is how to spot common errors and dispute them.

For readers of Reddit credit communities checking their reports for the first time, knowing what an actual error looks like is the first step to fixing it.
Common credit report errors
- Late payments on an account you paid on time.
- The same debt listed twice, by the original creditor and a debt buyer, both showing the full balance.
- An account you settled, or that was discharged in bankruptcy, still showing a balance owed.
- Accounts, addresses or names you don’t recognize, sometimes from someone with a similar name or birth date (a “mixed file”).
- Being reported as deceased, a deleted item reappearing, or accounts opened by an identity thief.
How to dispute an error
Get your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, then dispute specific inaccurate items with the bureau reporting them. The CFPB explains the process: explain what is wrong, include copies of supporting documents and keep records of what you send.
- The bureau generally must reinvestigate within 30 days and forward your dispute to the company that supplied the information (§ 1681i).
- If an item can’t be verified or is found inaccurate, it must be corrected or deleted. Accurate information can generally remain within the legal time limits (§ 1681c).
- You can also dispute directly with the company that furnished the information.
Disputes don’t guarantee removal. Accurate negative information, like a late payment that really happened, can generally stay on your report for up to seven years.
What to keep
- Your reports from all three bureaus.
- Any denial or adverse action letter.
- Proof of the error, such as bank statements, a settlement letter or bankruptcy discharge papers.
- Copies of your dispute letters and the bureaus’ replies.
