For readers of Reddit credit communities who have seen “dispute everything” advice, this is an important change: TransUnion now offers lenders a tool built to spot files where accurate negative items were scrubbed through false claims.

What TransUnion launched

TransUnion announced its Credit Washing and Synthetic Fraud Scores with adverse-action capability. That means lenders can use them in credit decisions and give consumers reason codes explaining a denial. TransUnion says these are the first scores of their kind with that capability. The risk platform Oscilar is the first to integrate them.

  • Credit washing is when accurate negative history, such as a charge-off, is suppressed, for example through false disputes or false identity-theft claims.
  • Synthetic identity fraud combines real and fabricated identity details to create a profile that looks legitimate.

The wider context

The launch comes as credit reporting disputes and complaints have surged. The CFPB’s 2025 Consumer Response Annual Report says it received about 5.8 million credit or consumer reporting complaints in 2025, and the CFPB has since changed its complaint process to require a bureau dispute first.

What this means if you’re disputing items

  • Dispute what is actually inaccurate. The FCRA gives you the right to dispute incomplete or inaccurate information. It isn’t a tool for removing accurate history.
  • Don’t file false identity-theft claims. Beyond the legal risk, scrubbed files may now be flagged and cited in a denial.
  • Keep documentation. Specific, documented disputes are the legitimate path, and they are what this kind of score is not designed to penalize.
  • Ask for the reason. If you are denied credit, the lender’s adverse action notice should explain why.

The takeaway

Shortcut dispute tactics get passed around in Reddit credit communities. This launch is a reminder that accuracy-based disputes are the sustainable approach, and that suppressing accurate history may now cost you at the application stage.
