For readers of Reddit credit communities who are juggling student loans, this report puts numbers on something many borrowers worry about: how much a serious delinquency can weigh on a credit score.
What the report found
Credit Karma’s 2026 Student Loan Debt Report analyzed TransUnion data for 24.2 million members with open student loans as of September 30, 2026.
- Borrowers 90 or more days behind on a student loan had a median credit score of 544.
- Borrowers fully current on all their student loans had a median of 683.
- About 10.1 million members (more than 41%) had at least one loan in deferment or forbearance, and many face restarting payments heading into 2027. That group’s median score was 646.
The scores in the report are VantageScore 3.0, so your own FICO scores may differ. These are medians across a large group, not a prediction for any one person.
How federal student loans are reported late
Federal loan servicers generally don’t report a federal student loan as late until it is 90 days past due, according to Credit Karma and Federal Student Aid. Once reported, a late mark can generally stay on a credit report for up to seven years. At 270 days past due, a federal loan goes into default.
What this means for your credit
- Know your status. Check whether each loan is current, deferred, or past due before payments restart.
- Act before 90 days. Contacting your servicer about repayment options early may help you avoid a reported delinquency.
- Check reports for accuracy. Accurate late payments can generally stay on a report. A late payment reported in error can be disputed with the credit bureau.
The takeaway
Student loan stress is a frequent topic in Reddit credit communities, and this data shows why staying current matters. If payments are restarting for you, plan ahead and keep an eye on your reports.
